Orca Bay

Orca Bay Mystery Quilt.

String blocks! 75 of them! I have never made a string block before. When I first read Bonnie’s blog and learned all about her stash user system, I made containers for all the scrap sizes that she recommends.  Since I had never made a scrap quilt before, I didn’t consider saving strings- which I interpreted to mean anything narrower than 1.5 inch width. I finally felt justified in getting rid of something from the scrap box- yaaay! I threw away everything smaller than 1.5 inch and sorted everything and put it all away. Now here I am making this mystery quilt, and what do I need? Yup, you guessed it– strings!!! So…. I actually had to cut them from my other strips and yardage.Needless to say, I now have a strings container :-) I think I cut too many strings so it will already start growing. The string blocks were to be in blue- but I substituted purple for the blue.

Several members of the quiltville chat group assured me that they were not too keen on strings before the Roll Roll Cotton Boll quilt, but that now they loved them. I can’t say that I have been convinced, but the blocks are cuter in person than I thought they would be. I am so anxious to see what we are going to do with these. Ben and I already spent some time seeing how the hourglass blocks might fit together with these string blocks, but we couldn’t come up with anything definitive. I guess we will just have to wait along with everybody else on the planet– except Bonnie, that is!!!
